Dec. 3, 2004 — A new federal law, entitled the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, went into effect this week enabling millions of Americans to get a snapshot of their credit history for free. The FACT Act grants consumers one free credit report a year from each of the big three credit reporting bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Tens of thousands of people took advantage of the new program that began Wednesday for consumers in 13 Western states. It will be available in stages to residents of other states over the next 10 months.

To get a free credit report, consumers can log on to www.AnnualCreditReport.com, created jointly by the credit reporting companies. They also can call toll-free 1-877-322-8228 or mail a form to Box 105281, Atlanta, Ga. 30348-5281. Consumers are allowed one free report per year from each agency.
