The first Group Service Centre in the HSBC Group was established in Guangzhou in 1996 and provides back office operations support such as data capturing, account maintenance, and transactional processing, as well as call centre services to HSBC Group entities in Hong Kong, Asia Pacific, Europe, Canada, USA and others around the globe. The rapid development of this Group Service Centre has seen it grow into a significant and critical operation employing over 1,700 people today and with further growth expected. Building on the success of the Guangzhou Centre, a further Group Service Centre, the fifth to be established in the Group, commenced operation in Shanghai in March 2002, and already employs about 1,000 people and continues to expand.
Established initially to contribute to the Group’s ‘Managing for Value’ strategy, and most recently to support HSBC’s ‘Managing for Growth’ strategy, our Group Service Centres have developed into large-scale centralized back office support centres for HSBC Group businesses globally, including our subsidiaries in Hong Kong and significant HSBC businesses elsewhere in the world. This support has been extended to credit card, insurance, trade services, credit operations and financial spreading businesses.
On February 14, 2005, HSBC Group Service Centre (GSC) welcomed its 2,000th employee, Christina Selvi in a celebration by a ceremony in Cyberjaya during which she received tokens of remembrance from Multimedia Development Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohamed Arif Nun. Chief operating officer, global resourcing East Asia, Susie Babani said GSC employees were “tremendously vibrant”, and helped create a positive effect on the environment, which translated into providing the best customer service possible to HSBC customers.
Meanwhile in London, an HSBC manager spoke about diversity, outlined the importance of employers embracing diversity, underpinned on the basis that by 2010 less than 20% of the UK’s working population will be white, male, able-bodied and under the age of 45.
